Problem
Informal caregivers are often the invisible backbone of dementia care, yet they manage complex responsibilities without professional training, structured support systems, or accessible guidance.
The Core Challenges
Caregiver Burnout and Emotional Strain
Managing progressive cognitive decline requires constant vigilance, multitasking, and emotional resilience. Over time, caregivers experience high levels of stress, fatigue, guilt, and social isolation.
Fragmented Care Coordination
In households with multiple caregivers, communication breakdowns around medications, appointments, meals, and symptom updates can create inconsistencies and increase the risk of errors.
Information Gaps and Uncertainty
Caregivers frequently struggle to interpret changing behaviors, determine whether symptoms require medical attention, and adapt routines as needs evolve. Existing tools provide data collection but little contextual support.
Limited Access to Timely Guidance
Questions often arise in the moment—outside clinical settings—when caregivers need immediate, practical advice and reassurance but have nowhere to turn.
Lack of Emotional and Peer Support
Most digital health tools focus exclusively on patient management, overlooking the emotional needs of caregivers and their desire to connect with others navigating similar experiences.
These challenges reveal an opportunity to design solutions that support not only the logistics of caregiving, but also the people behind the care.
Solution we came up with:
The final solution, Carenia, is a community-driven application built through direct engagement with real caregivers to ensure the interface is responsive to their unique emotional and logistical needs.
1. CareCompanion AI (Intelligent Caregiving Copilot)
To extend support beyond static features, I designed and prototyped an AI-powered caregiving assistant integrated within the Carenia ecosystem. Built using Voiceflow, the agent provides caregivers with contextual guidance, emotional support, and practical recommendations throughout their caregiving journey.
Symptom Guidance: Helps caregivers understand behaviours such as repetitive questioning, agitation, wandering, and sundowning while suggesting evidence-informed coping strategies.
Personalized Routine Generation: Creates adaptive daily schedules tailored to the patient's stage of Alzheimer's, preferences, and caregiver constraints.
Caregiver Wellbeing Support: Recognizes signs of stress and burnout, offering empathetic check-ins, self-care recommendations, and prompts to seek additional support when needed.
Emergency Assistance: Provides step-by-step guidance during urgent situations while encouraging caregivers to contact healthcare professionals or emergency services when appropriate.
To demonstrate the experience, I prototyped conversational scenarios showcasing both everyday caregiving support and high-stakes decision-making moments.
2. Routine Board (Collaborative Care Coordination)
To reduce the stress of managing daily care, we designed a synchronized scheduling system that keeps caregivers aligned and informed.
Shared Task Tracking: Real-time updates for medications, meals, hygiene, and appointments notify all caregivers once tasks are completed.
Dynamic Scheduling: Care plans can be adjusted as the patient's condition evolves, ensuring routines remain realistic and adaptable.
AI-Augmented Planning: CareCompanion AI complements the board by generating personalized routines and suggesting modifications based on changing needs and caregiver feedback.
Additional Features
Behaviour & Mood Log (Data-Informed Care)
A logging system designed to bridge communication gaps between caregivers and healthcare professionals.
• Track episodes of sundowning, mood fluctuations, sleep disturbances, and behavioural changes.
• Generate doctor-ready summaries that support more informed consultations and treatment discussions.
Community Space (Emotional Support Hub)
Recognizing that caregiving can be isolating, Carenia prioritizes the wellbeing of caregivers alongside patient care.
• Peer spaces to celebrate small wins, share experiences, and exchange practical advice.
• Expert-led Q&A sessions with healthcare professionals to provide trusted guidance in an accessible environment.
Empathy-Led Design System
Every interaction was designed to reduce cognitive load and emotional overwhelm.
• Accessibility-first visual language using calming, non-clinical aesthetics.
• Shared Notes that enable multiple caregivers to coordinate and support one another.
• Clear information hierarchy and simplified interaction patterns to foster confidence during high-stress situations.
